Welcome to Hedvig’s maritime world. Here, you can learn about the ship and life on board.
Since Hedvig is not a commercial vessel, we do not sail with paying passengers. Everyone on board has either a personal or interest-based connection to the ship.
If you’re interested in becoming involved with or sailing aboard Hedvig, feel free to contact us, and we’ll explore the possibilities together.
We are very open to inspiration and good ideas on how Hedvig can remain relevant to as many people as possible without becoming a commercial ship.
We ourselves have ideas about hosting school classes, where students could work on assignments in math, physics, and other subjects, drawing inspiration from the maritime world.
The purpose of our ownership of Hedvig is, at its core, to live out our dream of sailing the Danish and Nordic waters aboard a beautiful and historically significant ship.
However, when we delve deeper into this dream, it becomes about more than just us. It’s about sharing this experience with others. It’s about exploring and contributing to the preservation of an important part of Danish cultural heritage. It’s about inspiring new generations to take an interest in this magical world.
There is so much to learn, new people to meet, mistakes to make, victories to celebrate, wood to sand, sails to set, and oceans to navigate.
We see it as a purpose in itself to pass the ship on to its future owners in much better condition than when we took over. Whether that is in 4, 10, or 20 years, it remains our commitment.
When we took over the ship in the autumn of 2024, it was clear from the start that there was quite a bit of work to be done. That’s probably always the case with an old wooden ship.
However, there was a significant backlog of maintenance that we had to face right away. Since we don’t have the capacity to handle much of the work ourselves, we decided early on to ally with skilled boatbuilders. With their guidance, we have created a plan for the upcoming work.
The ship is in safe condition, and we have decided to sail through the 2025 season. At the end of September, we will take her to Nikolaj in Stege, where he will care for her with expertise and dedication.
The plan is to replace nearly all the frames, the upper planks, the bulwark, the stem, the gunwale, the rubbing strakes, and the deck.
Until then, we have carried out some temporary fixes, such as replacing a few deck seams to minimize water ingress and moisture in the ship. This will allow us to sail the 2025 season with at least a somewhat dry interior.
